はりあい【張り合い】

1 〔敵対〕 (a) rivalry; 〔競争〕 competition.

●意地の張り合いをする engage in a test of wills.

2 〔努力のかい〕 a feeling that something is worth the trouble; an inducement.

●張り合い抜け discouragement; disappointment.

●張り合いがある be worth doing; be worthwhile; be encouraging

・張り合いが抜ける, 張り合い抜けがする be discouraged; be disappointed; lose interest [enthusiasm] 《in…》

・生きる張り合いがある[ない] have something [nothing] to live for

・金にならないので(働いても)張り合いがない. It's hard to work up much enthusiasm for the job since there isn't any money in it.

・学ぶ意欲のない学生は教えても張り合いがない. There doesn't seem to be much point in teaching students who aren't interested.

●張り合いになる become an encouragement [a spur] 《to sb》.

●張り合いのない discouraging; disappointing; dull.

●張り合いをなくする be discouraging; cause sb to lose enthusiasm 《for…》 [interest 《in…》]

・作る前から「どうせ役に立たないんでしょ」なんて, 張り合いをなくすようなことを言わないでくれ. It's discouraging to hear you say it'll be useless even before I've started making it.
